What is done

  • Removal of moles, for cosmetic reasons or because something looks off.
  • Cysts: the whole capsule is removed, which is the only thing that keeps it from filling up again.
  • Lipomas.
  • Skin tags.
  • Warts.
  • Ingrown toenails.
  • Skin biopsies for diagnosis.
  • Excision of malignant lesions with margins.

What it's like

It is done in the office under local anesthesia: you feel the initial pinch and then pressure, not pain. Depending on size it is closed with stitches — removed in one or two weeks — or left to heal on its own.

You walk out, with written aftercare instructions. Most people go back to their routine the same day, avoiding exertion and sun on the area.

The scar

Every incision leaves a mark; what can be controlled is how much it shows. It depends on the area, the tension of the skin, how you heal and — a great deal — on the care during the first weeks, above all sun protection.

You are told what scar to expect before the procedure. If there is a history of keloids, it is planned differently.

The pathology report

When appropriate, the tissue is sent for histopathology. The result is reviewed at the follow-up visit — and that is what turns a cosmetic procedure into a procedure with an answer.

Whatever is removed can be sent to pathology, and that is the real difference from having something taken off at a salon or at home: the lesion doesn't just disappear — you also find out what it was.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?

The anesthetic pinch does, for a few seconds. After that you feel pressure and movement, not pain.

Will I need time off?

Almost never. You avoid physical exertion on the area for a few days.

Can I have a mole removed purely for appearance?

Yes — and it still goes to pathology. That is what separates this from having it done anywhere else.

When do the stitches come out?

In one or two weeks, depending on the area. The face is usually sooner.
